The Medieval City of Mystras

The walled castle-town of Mystras, set onto the steep slopes of Mount Taygetos, is visible from afar. A winding road brings you to the castle gate, where you’ll begin your guided walk. The castle, built by a Frankish Crusader, is the oldest part of the site, with its original 13th-century design largely intact. Under Byzantine rule, Mystras expanded and grew into a center of power and culture, with an upper section, home to the palaces of the nobility, and the lower city, where townspeople lived and worked. The narrow lanes and public squares are lined with churches, convents, monasteries, workshops and homes in a distinctive architectural style that blends Eastern Mediterranean influences. Your guide will share highlights of the complex history and rich heritage as you stroll. The tour features interior visits of the 13th-century cathedral of Agios Dimitrios, where the last Byzantine emperor, Constantine XII, was crowned, as well as the 14th-century churches of Evangelistria and Pantanassa, whose ornamentation and frescoes have survived over the centuries. It’s then a quick drive to Xenia, a family restaurant that serves up beautiful views along with a delicious lunch, before the return trip to the yacht.
