Evening Cocktail at the Cave of Xoroi

Submitted by carmine.nezi on

On the headlands of the beautiful Cala en Porter village of Menorca, you will find Cova d’en Xoroi, or the Cave of Xoroi. Formerly a prehistoric dwelling, it is now a bar and restaurant perched high on the side of a steep cliff offering spectacular views of the Mediterranean. During the day, this mythic cave's nooks and crannies are a delight to discover, as is the charming diversion of the legend of Xoroi, a romantic fairytale of a shipwreck survivor who finds shelter in the caves and falls in love with a beautiful young woman.

Hiking the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

Take a guided stroll through the pure natural beauty of Menorca, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. From the fishing village of Es Grau in the S’Albufera des Grau Natural Park, you will reach a lagoon enclosed by dunes with a river running to the sea. Paths lead through the habitats of wetland birds such as ducks, coots and herons. Ospreys, kites and booted eagles also nest in the park, and rare Iberian green frogs live in seasonal torrents and ponds. Vegetation includes holm oaks, lentisk shrubs and tree spurge.

Megalithic and Modern Mahón

Submitted by carmine.nezi on

Begin your exploration just outside of Mahón at the megalithic village of Trepucó, where you can see remnants of the earliest cultures of Menorca. Observe fragments of the original Cyclopean wall, Bronze Age megaliths, ruins of dwellings, and stone monuments called taulas. Then travel into the heart of Mahón for a walking tour of more modern attractions. Pale façades of whitewashed buildings line wide-open plazas, and the architecture of this elegant town tells the story of various ruling powers that have occupied the island over the centuries.

The approach to Menorca reveals white houses clinging to rocks with a historic town rising above one of the world's largest natural harbors, used as a port since the 3rd century BC. King Island floats halfway in, featuring ruins of a 6th-century basilica. The streets of Menorca present an interesting blend of ancient treasures, such as the medieval wall of San Roque Arch and the relics in the Museu de Menorca, and more recent gems, including the grand Georgian homes that remain from the British occupation of the island.
