Discover the heritage, architecture and unique traditions of Valencia from both the comfort of the tour transport and on foot, walking the streets of its oldest neighborhoods. This exploration begins with a narrated drive along the Avenida del Puerto, past such landmarks as the bullring and the central station, into the heart of historic Valencia. The guided walk begins in the Plaza de la Merced, by the central market, a gorgeous 1928 structure. Nearby is La Lonja, the former silk exchange, whose grand Gothic style is a symbol of Valencia’s 15th-century Golden Age. From here it’s a short walk down the narrow winding streets to the Cathedral, built on the site of mosque following the 13th century Reconquista. Going inside, your guide will highlight the important decorative elements that include frescoes and works by Goya. Time permitting, visit at your own pace or stroll around the Plaza de la Reina and the Plaza de la Virgen, the two lovely squares between which the cathedral is nestled. Then meet the transport for the short drive to the Fallas Museum, housed in a former leper hospital later used as barracks and a prison. Fallas are a Valencian tradition that dates to the Middle Ages, giant papier-mache figures that are created for and then burned during religious celebrations of the feast of St. Joseph. The museum displays the fallas that have been spared since the 1930s by popular vote. Before returning to the yacht, stop for photos at the City of Arts & Science, the modern complex designed by award-winning architect Santiago Calatrava.
