Bioluminescence Kayaking

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Puerto Mosquito Bay on Vieques is one of a handful of bioluminescent bays in the world. Microscopic organisms known as Dinoflagellates glow whenever there is movement in the water, a phenomena that best appreciated in the dark.

It’s a short ride from the yacht in Esperanza to the bay, where you’ll meet your tour guides. They will first hold a thorough safety and environmental briefing on using the glass-bottomed, two-person kayak and protecting this delicate ecosystem.

Once in the water, you’ll see streaks of light with each stroke of the paddle and whenever a fish darts below. As you paddle across the bay, learn about the mangrove forests and the marine and coastal wildlife that live in and around the lagoon. On clear nights, the guides will point out the different stars and constellations visible from the bay.
